Crystallization characteristics for 409L material

The solid liquid phase region of 409L steel is very small, less than 30.

Almost no gamma phase at high temperature. So 409L began to crystallize in the steel after pouring, due to direct contact with the mold surface, the degree of supercooling of liquid phase, and mold surface and promote heterogeneous nucleation, therefore, liquid phase nucleation rate is very high, the formation of surface fine equiaxed grains. The formation of fine equiaxed grains on the surface of the titanium alloy is very fast, and the titanium carbide is too short to precipitate. After the formation of the equiaxed zone, the columnar crystals are formed in the steel, but there is no columnar crystal in 409L steel.

Carbon content of 409L steel is very low, even if the delta phase, the amount is very small. Therefore, the performance will not have a big impact.

409L steel has almost no alpha to gamma phase transition from high temperature to low temperature, so it is easy to grow grain, appear coarse ferrite, low strength, in continuous casting slab, cut off the line, easy to appear elbow phenomenon, affecting the normal production.
